Closing Agent

Also known as Settlement Agent

The neutral party — often from a title company or attorney's office — who oversees and finalizes the closing.

In plain English

The closing agent manages the closing process: collecting signatures, disbursing funds to the right parties, and ensuring documents are properly recorded. Depending on the state, this may be a title company, escrow company, or attorney.

Why it matters

Knowing who your closing agent is (and confirming wiring instructions directly with them by phone) is a key defense against closing wire fraud.
