Escalation Clause
A clause that automatically raises your offer price to beat a competing bid, up to a set maximum.
In plain English
An escalation clause states you'll automatically increase your offer by a set increment above any competing offer, up to a maximum price you specify — used mainly in competitive, multiple-offer situations.
Why it matters
Escalation clauses can win a bidding war but also reveal your maximum price to the seller — worth discussing the tradeoffs with your agent before using one.
