TitleHomebuying Glossary
Title Insurance
A one-time-purchase policy that protects against title problems missed during the title search.
In plain English
Title insurance protects you (and separately, your lender) against financial loss from title defects that existed before your purchase but weren't discovered during the title search, such as forged documents or unknown heirs.
Why it matters
Unlike most insurance, you pay for title insurance once at closing, and it protects you for as long as you own the home.
