Deductible
The amount you pay out of pocket on a claim before your insurance coverage kicks in.
In plain English
Your deductible is the portion of a covered loss you're responsible for before insurance pays the rest. A higher deductible generally means a lower premium, but more out-of-pocket cost if you file a claim.
Why it matters
Make sure your deductible is an amount you could actually afford to pay on short notice — it's not just a number on a policy, it's real cash you'd owe after a loss.
