Construction & RenovationHomebuying Glossary
Subcontractor
A specialized tradesperson (electrician, plumber, etc.) hired by a general contractor for specific work.
In plain English
Subcontractors are specialists — electricians, plumbers, roofers, and others — hired by the general contractor to perform specific parts of a larger project, rather than being hired directly by the homeowner.
Why it matters
If subcontractors aren't paid by the general contractor, they can sometimes place a lien on your home — this is exactly what a lien waiver protects against.
